Writer's picture: Little PeteLittle Pete

We have 11 today on this Alabama Saturday card at the Spa.. We also have the G2 Lake Placid as the girls take center stage today. I will be condensing my plays down to just the number and attacking the early double (Races 1 & 2) and a spot pick 3 (Races 6-8). Big Pete will attack his "Play of the Day" and the late pick 3 (Races 9-11); GOOD LUCK.

Little Pete's Early Double:

Race 1:

I am all-in on (3) Hunt Ball here to run an impressive debut. This horse will blaze from the gate to find a stalking position and then show off the talent late down the stretch. If this horse isn't up to the challenge, then I am going to hedge with two others. (1) Risk It is going to be the speed in here and the favorable post position will only benefit this horse; SPEED WINS SPRINTS. (7) Special Event is another Bill Mott entry in here who has a race under their belt and we should expect that experience to spring board this horse into an impressive second time out; STAMINA.

$5.00 WPS 3 Cost: $15.00

$5.00 Ex 3 w/ 1,7 Cost: $10.00

$2.00 Ex 1,7 w/ 1,3,7 Cost: $8.00

Race 2:

(5) Dancing Groom is getting the Irad bump in this one and should have the stamina to run a big one in here late. (2) Tom Collins is going to hit the rail early and then wait for the lane to open up to shoot for the wire. If there is any moisture in the ground then we should see this horse fly. (6) Walley World is sticking around in here with the surface switch and I think worth the investment for the connections. My last play will be (11) Rocket Night is lightning in the morning and the outside break should allow this horse to seek the lead without the commotion; worth a play.

$3.00 WPS 5 Cost: $9.00

$2.00 Ex 2,5 w/ 2,5,6,11 Cost: $12.00

$1.00 Ex 6,11 w/ 2,5,6,11 Cost: $6.00

Big Pete's "Play of the Day":

Race 3:

We stay on the turf for this Alw sprint. There is some speed signed on but the advantage may come with the outside runner, (7) DONTLOOKBACKATALL as she has the option to go or sit just off if the others go too fast. She'll be clear of the inside scramble and let Rosario do his thing. She broke her maiden up here last year and now gets back to the grass and shortens up a bit.

(2) Georgee's Spirit to come late and (8) You Gotta Have Fun to take them as far as she can.

$ 7.00 WPS 7 Cost: $ 21.00

$ 3.00 Ex Box 2, 7, 8 Cost: $ 18.00

We'll use (7) DONTLOOKBACKATALL in R3 and try to cash in on a Daily Double.

(1) Ensign Parker or (5) Ragtime Blues in the 4th.

$ 7.00 Daily Double 7 w/ 1, 5 Cost $ 14.00

Big Pete's "Play of the Day":

Race 5:

The entry looks strong with a speed and a closer for Rudy but this race came up pretty strong with some contenders. A will try the Mott/Fr combo on the Uncle Mo, (5) A LA CARTE. This gelding has been drilling the morning workouts and they add blinkers to sharpen him up. He has posted high speed figures to start his career before trying turf and then met a salty group last time. He comes in with a purpose and the equipment change indicates Mott means business today.

$ 7.00 WPS 5 Cost: $ 21.00

$ 3.00 Ex Box 1, 5, 8 Cost: $ 18.00

Little Pete's Spot Pick 3:

Race 6:

(9) Leadership Ability is going to be a heavy favorite in here with the class drop and this horse has a chance to wire the field and a must play. (16) Mucho Mama Mia should be stalking the front throughout and will get the Irad kick late to compete in here. (5) PinstripePizzois my last play in here who is improving each time out and I think the move back to dirt will be a successful one.

$3.00 Ex Box 5,9,16 Cost: $18.00

Race 7 (Gr.2 Lake Placid):

My top pick in here is (1) Heavenly Sunday under a streaking Tyler Gaffalione. Thise horse has the post position and the staying power at this distance. We should expect an early attack to the lead and benefit from the good turf surface. (2) Aspray is going to be stalking that lead and is a must play in here with Flavien Prat aboard. This horse will fan out wide late and search for the wire first. (5) JuniperMarshmellow is an interesting horse to me in here and should excel on an off turf track. This horse is a gamer and will be ready for the challenge in the Gr.2 Lake Placid. My last play will be another Chad Brown horse in a late closing (7) Surge Capacity This horse's running style is setup for Joel Rosario and I trust him to avoid trouble early to have a ton of horse late.

$5.00 WPS 1 Cost: $15.00

$2.00 Ex 1,5 w/ 1,2,5,7 Cost: $12.00 $1.00 Ex 2,7 w/ 1,2,5,7 Cost: $6.00

Race 8:

(6) Mosienko is my top play in here who is a gutsy performer. With Luis Saez taking the mount in this one I think this horse is going to be live on the tote board and will be stalking throughout and close with a winning effort. (7) Nostalgic is going to improve drastically second time out from the lay off and put up a triple beyer speed race last time out; must play. (3) Gerrymander is the deserving favorite and performs each time out there. This horse is looking to hit the winner's circle for the first time in 2023 and I don't want it to be at our loss.

$5.00 WPS 6 Cost: $15.00

$8.00 Ex 6 w/ 3,7 Cost: $16.00

$2.00 Ex 3,7 w/ 3,6,7 Cost: $8.00

Big Pete's Late Pick 3:

Race 9 (Gr.1 Alabama):

The Alabama, at this demanding 10F distance, is the prestige race for 3yr old fillies. Many champions have crossed the wire first in this race and (3) JULIA SHINING was built for this race. This Curlin will love the distance and will reel in the front runners when Luis says. She came up short in her two tries this year at much shorter distances. Now she gets to stretch her legs. Pletcher sends out a rabbit for Repole's (7) GAMBLING GIRL as she will be rolling late too but Julia should be well clear by the time she gets rolling. The sleeper in here is the invader (9) TAXED. She picks up the pieces and won't mind the distance. Most of these will stop mid stretch but stamina is the above three's middle name.

$ 7.00 WPS 3 Cost: $ 21.00

$ 3.00 Ex Box 3, 7, 9 Cost: $ 18.00

Race 10:

Both of Brown's runners look solid in this 1M turf. (2) NAPOLIEONIC WAR was possibly a little short in his return from a years abscence last time and I prefer this one. Prat stays and they cut back slightly. 7:2 ML would be a gift IMO. (9) VERBAL exits some strong races and is probably your horse to beat. Irad will get first jump on the closers and this guy is a 1M specialist. A must use to stay alive in this sequence. (5) WHISPER NOT is a little scary in here for Walsh. They shipped in last race and lit up the toteboard. He looks solid again but we won't get double digit odds today.

$ 7.00 WPS 2 Cost: $ 21.00

$ 3.00 Ex 2, 9 w/ 2, 4, 5, 9 Cost: $ 18.00

Race 11:

Brad Cox is always dangerous when he comes here. He's 17 out of 26 hitting the board. (10) HENSON was entered in the body of the race but were most likley praying for rain. This off the turf sprint fits well with him and he continues to work well. The two MTO that jump off the page are (1A) PETROLO and (14) BLUE PLATE SPECIAL. Both were very competative at this level and sport speed figures that stack up well against this group. Both are a must use to cash this late Paick 3 ticket.

$ 7.00 WPS 5 Cost: $ 21.00

$ 3.00 Ex 2, 5 w/ 2, 5, 7, 9 Cost: $ 18.00

Little Pete's Alabama Pick:

(9) Taxed

The track is going to be playing fast and I think that plays into this horse's late closing speed. This distance plays to the horses with the best trip and I think this horse has more options to save ground than others. I think that optionality will pay off late and will be a decent price in here

$5.00 Ex 9 w/ 1,2,7,8,10 Cost: $ 25.00
