Saratoga: Friday, 8/4, Plays - Pete's Picks

Writer's picture: Little PeteLittle Pete

We have 11 today on the Saratoga card and we may be battling some severe weather, so prepare to call an audible during the day. We have two stake races and I will be covering each; lucky you! I will be attacking the early double (Races 1 & 2) and a spot pick 3 (Races 6-8). Big Pete will attack his "Play of the Day" and the late pick 3 (Races 9-11); GOOD LUCK.

Little Pete's $1.00 Early Double:

R1: 1, 4, 6

R2: 2, 4, 7, 9
Cost: $12.00

Little Pete's $ 1.00 Spot Pick 3:

R6: 3, 4

R7: 3, 4, 7, 9

R8: 1, 3, 5, 8, 10

Cost: $ 40.00

Big Pete's $ 1.00 Late Pick 3:

R9: 3, 5, 7, 8

R10: 8, 12, 13, 14

R11: 3, 13, 14

Cost: $ 48.00

Little Pete's Early Double:

Race 1:

(1A) Index Fund is training well and consistently to be the play in here under Irad and a must use. (4) Wicked Again is a son of Gunner Runner and will be shot to the front early. This horse has some experience under his belt and we should expect plenty of horse left down the stretch. My last play will be the surface switch on (6) Metallurgic to be a horse that shoots from the gate. This horse should be able to get a nice rail position from the break and has a chance to use the head start on Index Fund late.

$3.00 Ex Box 1, 4, 6 Cost: $18.00

Race 2:

(2B) Yaqui Valley raced Saturday and returns 6 days later. That was turf and now he goes back to the dirt. That's where he belongs and that turf race is looking more like a public work out. I like the cut back and he's shown speed on the dirt in his first two races. (4) Stuck on You stays in and Wesley Ward typically has his 2 year olds prepped for speed. The experience will pay off late and make this horse an interesting play with nice odds. (7) CptBobsBTwentyNine has a tough name but great connections. This horse is training well in the morning and when Pletcher puts a firster out, we should expect a late kick down the stretch with SPEED. (9) Honest Al is a horse I like here to improve second time out and I think Manny will be able to stalk the pace and fan out wide for an exciting stretch drive.

$3.00 WPS 2 Cost: $9.00
$2.00 Ex 2,7 w/ 2,4,7,9 Cost: $12.00
$1.00 Ex 4,9 w/ 2,4,7,9 Cost: $6.00

Big Pete's "Play of the Day":

Race 3:

The rain should only help (3) ZERTZ in this spot. Atras claimed this gelding two back and he managed to hold on for 2nd going 1M. Now they cut him back to his prefered 6F and Davis stays up. This Super Saver should glide over the off going and they meet a very suspect field. Most are at this 10k level for a reason as they all are declining in some way.

(2) Money Mike hasn't faced this cheap before as he takes a big drop as does (7) Turnsandconditions. Both may have issues but the company is much easier than they are used to.

$ 7.00 WPS 3 Cost $ 21.00

$ 3.00 Ex Box 2, 3, 7 Cost $ 18.00

We’ll also use (3) Zertz in R3 and try to cash in on a Daily Double.

(5) Jessica's Ride ran ok in the muddy in her debut and (16) Embraceable Gal did no running at all last time but is the MTO and is a Midnight Lute in the 4th.

$ 7.00 Daily Double 3 w/ 5, 16 Cost $ 14.00

Big Pete's "Play of the Day":

Race 5:

(3) BALTASAR looked sharp winning at this 7F last time out and meets similar today. The Bodemeister's can handle the off and they get speed to target. He was off a year before his last race but the works that followed are steady and strong. I'm looking for the Re-Pete at this 5:1ML.

(4) Carmichael cuts back going one turn and Castellano getting aboard (7) Patient Capital may be just what this Practical Joke needs. Patients early and gaining late.

$ 7.00 WPS 3 Cost $ 21.00

$ 3.00 Ex Box 3, 4, 7 Cost $ 18.00

We’ll also use (3) Baltasar in R3 and try to cash in on a Daily Double.

(2) Fast Boat to Skye ran ok in the his mud attempt last year and (4) Happy Bob should be smiling as he crosses the finish line in the 4th.

$ 7.00 Daily Double 3 w/ 2, 4 Cost $ 14.00

Big Pete's Late Pick 3:

Race 9:

(5) MISSING FORTUNE ships in from the minor leagues but is fast and will be the one to catch. She needs the lead by herself and she might get her wish. The track is playing nice to speed as of late so she's worth a shot. (7) TIMELY CONQUEST looks strong in here. I'm not to keen on maiden winners facing winners for the first time but her debut was very good compared to this group. Hennig is heating up and Johnny V returns. The Accelerates handle the mud/slop so she doesn't need to improve much to take this field down. (8) BIG HAZEL is the savor for me. Her maiden win was sharp enough and she picks up Saez. She was dusted by Timely Conquest three back but came right back next out to break her maiden. (3) BIG BEAN CHRISTINE does well on off tracks so I'll include.

$ 7.00 WPS 5 Cost $ 21.00

$ 3.00 Ex 5, 7 w/ 3, 5, 7, 8 Cost $ 18.00

Race 10:

(8) HE'S GOT IT is a Central Banker that gets to play in the mud. He'll be a price with good off track breeding. (12) ONE GIANT LEAP ships in for Ward with back to back scores that make him the horse to beat. Either one of his last two should be enough. I like an odd one in this dirt sprint. Mostly that Saez picks up the mount but, (13) GABE looks faster then most in here. He only has two races, out of 7, that he's done any kind of racing. The connections claimed him last time and were looking for an off the turf race and got it. We should get all of this 8:1ML and a watered down field. All in. (14) COURTHOUSE COVE is the other MTO ands gets Irad. That's all you need to include.

$ 7.00 WPS 13 Cost $ 21.00

$ 3.00 Ex 12, 13 w/ 8, 12, 13, 14 Cost $ 18.00

Race 11:

Both MTO's will dominate the betting and look the part. I prefer (13) SOUTH STREET over his stable mate (14) CHILENO because of the bullet work last week. Lezcano has the lone win on South Street and this gelding has made steady improvements in his last two outings. Chileno was claimed recent and Rice is doing well with that move recently. The barn has cooled down a little the last two weeks so I have to use a savor as well. (3) SUERTE fits that roll. Distance shouldn't be a problem and this Frosted has speed. If Franco can control the fractions, I don't think they catch him.

$ 7.00 WPS 3 Cost $ 21.00

$ 3.00 Ex 3, 13 w/ 3, 6, 13, 14 Cost $ 18.00
