Saratoga: Saturday, 8/27, TRAVERS DAY - Pete's Picks

Writer's picture: Little PeteLittle Pete

The biggest day of the season is upon us at Saratoga and we have a beautiful day for racing. We have a stacked 13 race card today and plenty of opportunities to cash in some tickets. We are going to look to cover as many as we can in here and will be locked in to taking down some horizontal plays. I will be focused on taking down an "early" double (Races 3 & 4) and a spot pick 3 (Races 8-10). Big Pete is coming into this one after a nice day yesterday and will have a couple of his "Plays of the Day". He also will be closing the card with the late pick 3 (Races 11-13). We appreciate you taking a look at our write-up and GOOD LUCK.

Travers Picks:

Race 1:

Little Pete: (1) Cyberknife. This is a much more manageable field then last time this horse faced Epicenter and I think that makes all the difference late.

Big Pete: (8) ZANDON. Turns the table on Epicenter today.

Little Pete's "Early" Double:

Race 3:

The horse I landed on in here is (9) Great Workout who I think will enjoy some distance relief and will be able to run down tiring horses down the stretch. I also like (8) Mr. Kringle to run a similar race in here and be able to translate that late speed in to a great dirt performance at a decent price. My last play will be (2) Bold Journey who just missed last time out after a tough break and is running lights out in the morning headed into this one. Jose Ortiz had a great day yesterday and he will be looking to keep the momentum headed into this stacked card.

$3.00 WPS 9 Cost: $9.00

$2.00 Ex Box 2,8,9 Cost: $12.00

Race 4:

I landed on (4) Fluffy Socks in here who just missed last time out against the favorite and I think will get a fantastic ride in here under Irad Ortiz. This is our first turf race in two days so I can imagine how hungry Irad is ready to get back to it. (2) Lemista and (5) Technical Analysis are both must plays as well in here from the Chad Brown bard, but I am going to lean on (4) Fluffy Socks in here.

$5.00 WPS 4 Cost: $15.00

$4.00 Ex 4 w/ 2,5 Cost: $8.00

$2.00 Ex 2,5 w/ 2,4,5 Cost: $8.00

Big Pete's "Play of the Day":

Race 5 :

It’s hard to bet against (3) JACKIE’S WARRIOR as he continues to win. He was geared down last time so there is plenty left in the tank. We’ll look for the runnerup to cash in on the exacta.

(4) Three Two Zone has been picked up his game recently and can beat the rest with a strong rally late (7) Kneedeepinsnow likes to come from way back. That probably works in his favor today as the other speeds will have to deal with Jackie up front.

$ 10.00 Exacta 3 w/ 4, 7 Cost $ 14.00

$ 3.00 Exacta 4, 7 w/ 3, 4, 7 Cost $ 12.00

We’ll also use (3) Jackie’s Warrior in R5 and try to cash a DAILY DOUBLE play.

We’ll use (7) Swift Tap and (8) Luni Sima in the 6h.

$ 7.00 Double 3w/ 7 8 Cost $ 14.00

Big Pete's "Play of the Day":

Race 7:

I’m looking for Jose to sit chilly on (4) NOBLE EMOTION early as several in here want the lead. She’ll need to save ground and find a way through when she gets the signal. That was a better field she faced last time and will be a tough customer today.

$ 10.00 WPS 4 Cost $ 30.00

Little Pete's Spot Pick 3:

Race 8:

I am a big (6) Jack Christopher fan and I think is worthy of a single in here. This horse has plenty of speed and I think will get back to his winning ways quickly. With that said, I do like the other Chad Brown horse in here with (9) Accretive. This horse has plenty of speed and just missed last time out. We should only see improvement in this horse’s third career start and that makes this horse very dangerous. My last play will be with (5) Happy Jack who I think benefits from an early speed battle. This horse is training well coming in and likes to win right off the pace. This horse has shown ability at further distances and I think will be able to have a lane to run into late.

$3.00 WPS 6 Cost: $9.00

$2.00 Ex Box 5,6,9 Cost: $12.00

Race 9:

I am on (1) Letruska in this one. This horse has been training lights out coming into this one and I am throwing the last race out for this horse. I think Jose Ortiz is going to be aggressive enough to get the rail and then this proven champion will show the true Letruska. (3) Clairiere and (5) Malathaat are going to be battling up front as well throughout and must be included; I just will be leaning on Jose Ortiz a bit more in here.

$5.00 WPS 1 Cost: $15.00

$2.00 Ex Box 1,3,5 Cost: $12.00

Race 10:

(1) Adhamo is coming into this one extremely strong and Flavien Prat is going to save all of the ground in here to have a fresh horse late. (3) Broome is making their US debut and the O’Brien and Moore combo is tough to not include on grass. (6) Gufo is a favorite of mine who I think will get a better ride from Rosario this time out and this horse has plenty of pedigree left to really make this interesting late. My last play will be (10) Mira Mission who I think at a really good price is a horse that will be eating up grass late. This horse is looking for their first Gr.1 victory and I think will be a surprising horse surging late to try and get just that.

$3.00 WPS 1 Cost: $9.00

$2.00 Ex 1,6 w/ 1,3,6,10 Cost: $12.00

$1.00 Ex 3,10 w/ 1,3,6,10 Cost: $6.00

Big Pete's Late Pick 3:

Race 11:

(6) EPICENTER is hard to leave off the ticket as this guy delivers every time. He’s clearly the horse to beat and I’ll use. I prefer the Jim Dandy runners vs the Haskel/Curlin runners in this Mid-Summer Derby. (7) EARLY VOTING and Jose will likely be aggressive again as they did last time. The long run to the first turn allows him to clear and get into a rhythm up front. His Preakness run is what I’m looking for as he may have come into the Dandy a little short. Same could be said about (8) ZANDON. He didn’t race after the Derby and waited for the Dandy. He got to the front but couldn’t hold off Epicenter late. He’s out working Early Voting in his lat two morning sessions and looks primed for a big run today. The sleeper for me is (4) GILDED AGE. He has turned it up a notch in his last two and will enjoy the longer distance he gets today. I don’t think he can win but 2nd place pays well and can juice up the exacta.

$ 7.00 WPS 8 Cost $ 21.00

$ 3.00 Ex 7, 8 w/ 4, 6, 7, 8 Cost $ 18.00

Race 12:

I’m not fond of the Monmouth shippers and landed on all three exiting the Mister Chairman race earlier in the meet. Irad returns on (7) HEYMACKIT’SJACK and will be tough off their last two. He’s finished in front of (2) FEATHERS ROAD twice now and is becoming a pattern. These two will likely be fighting out but I prefer the third runner exiting that race. (5) RIPE FOR MISCHIEF got to within two lengths and couldn’t hold off the closers. Saez gives this guy another shot and so will I. Look for them to get first jump on the closers and fight it out till the end. It would also give his dad, More Than Ready, a smile who passed away yesterday. (6) FUOCO is the speed and that always helps in this short 5.5F dash.

$ 7.00 WPS 5 Cost $ 21.00

$ 3.00 Ex 5, 6 w/ 2, 5, 6, 7 Cost $18.00

Race 13:

I like the bookends is this finale on Travers Day. (9) MISS TAPIRADO should have enough time for the first turn to find a spot to save ground. She settle for 2nd last time while posting a big figure for this level. Lezcano is quietly having a nice meet and winning with prices. 5:1ML would be hard to pass up on this Tapit. The rail runner,

(1) PARNAC was bet hard last time shipping in and ran ok. They should save some ground here instead of trying to rally from the parking lot last time. If she gets the trip, she’ll be tough to beat. (2) INVINCIBLE GAL prefers 2nd so that’s where will figure her. She has been facing better though but she’ll be short odds and worth a bet against. (4) WICKED GROOVE is the price. She will get overlooked here and ran into a tough bunch when she tried this circuit last time. A similar effort puts her right there. been away for some time and now drops. Not a good sign but the connections are solid and they usually put out a good product. Rain or shine, this guy stacks up well with this group

$ 7.00 WPS 9 Cost $ 21.00

$ 3.00 Ex 1, 9 w/ 1, 2, 4, 9 Cost $ 18.00
