Saratoga: Saturday, 8/5, Plays - Pete's Picks

Writer's picture: Little PeteLittle Pete

One of the premier races at Saratoga... The Whitney Stakes!! Only two come off the turf today after some consistent rain we have been getting but the rest remain on at Saratoga. The day is shaping up to be a beautiful one and we expect a crowded track. We have a 12 race card and we will be looking to cover most of them. I will be focused on the early double (Races 1 & 2) and taking down a spot pick 3 (Races 7-9). Big Pete will be locked into a couple of his "Plays of the Day" as well as the late pick 3 (Races 10-12). We appreciate you taking a look at this write-up and GOOD LUCK.

Big Pete's "Play of the Day":

Race 3:

(6) GLORY ROAD has been consistant the last two years with 4 wins out of 7 this year. He likes to come from the back so he may need help with others pressuring the outside runner, Victorious Wave, early. Lezcano is riding the best up there right now so that with the off track moves this guy up.

I’m looking for either (8) Victorious Wave to hold on or (5) No More Talk to get first jump on the speed and be close at the wire for the 2nd spot.

$ 7.00 WPS 6 Cost $ 21.00

$ 7.00 Exacta 6 w/ 5, 8 Cost $ 14.00

We’ll also use (6) Glory Road in R3 and try to cash a DAILY DOUBLE play.

We’ll use (5) Gimmedamoney and (7) Shared Success in the 4th.

$ 7.00 Double 6 w/ 5, 7 Cost $ 14.00

Big Pete's "Play of the Day":

Race 5:

(4) GOLDEN ARM broke his maiden first out, then ran into a monster for this level, 2nd time out. They tried a turf sprint but that's not his thing. They move back to dirt, get an off track and stretches out. All what this gelding wants. We should get all of this 6:1ML and looks live to me.

(6) Thank You Jon could be tough being lone speed and (3) Two For Charging has a win on this Spa dirt. one for 2nd.

$ 7.00 WPS 4 Cost $ 21.00

$ 7.00 Exacta Box 3, 4, 6 Cost $ 18.00

We’ll also use (4) Golden Arm in R5 and try to cash a DAILY DOUBLE play.

We’ll use (4) Caravel and (8) Remuda in the 6th.

$ 7.00 Double 4 w/ 4, 8 Cost $ 14.00

Big Pete's Late Pick 3:

Race 10:

(6) CODY'S WISH continues to dominate this level and his Met Mile was his best. I don't see why he can't handle the two turns. That shouldn't get him beat. It's more of the Graveyard of champions that I worry about. It's a great story and a great horse and a must use but I will go with another in here that I think can make some noise. I really haven't been a fan of (5) WHITE ABARRIO throughout his career but he's growing on me. His last two are a good indication that he's improving in his 4yr old campaign. A slight stumble cost him position against Cody last time and the two turns does help this guy. This RACE DAY offspring should also like any left over moisture as his dad was a freak on it. I'll swing for the fence and put this guy on top as Irad only adds the the "LIVE" look.

$ 7.00 WPS 5 Cost $ 21.00

$ 5.00 Ex 5, 6 w/ 1, 5, 6 Cost $ 20.00

Race 11:

We will spread out in here as this NY Bred sprint came up strong. (2) SIGNATOR gets L1 after a dominate maiden win and looks like a promising NY colt. His stablemate, (9) CAPTURE THE FLAG, was also a dominate maiden winner but that was here last year. I like that Saez stays and the 7F fits this Quality Road well. (5) FRAT PRAT is yet another coming off a strong maiden score. This one did it on the front end and will likely try it again from that spot. He too won;t mind an off track but it may dry out by then. (7) EVERSO MISCHIEVOUS ships in for Cox and is probably the horse to beat. He can stalk or go with Frat. These shippers haven't been winning so I hesitatet to put on top but he's a must use for me. I can't ignore the improvement that Rudy has done with (3) BREW PUB this year. A win and two 2nds so far and this 5yr old figures to get a pefect set up. He prefers moisture and cuts back to his best distance. Jr was on with that win this year and fits his stalkig style to come catch them late.

$ 7.00 WPS 3 Cost $ 21.00

$ 3.00 Ex 3, 7 w/ 3, 5, 7, 9 Cost $ 18.00

Race 12:

With this staying on the grass, (12) BEUYS gets the nod as Walsh has been solid up here this year. He flies in an out of town rider snd seems to handle a soft turf. His last speed figure tops this group by a lot and is your horse to beat. With the post position, I look for others incase it takes it's toll. (1) SHUTTERS gets the cozy rail with the short run to the first turn. Johnny V saves ground right behind the speeds and tips out turning for home. (3) RUSE is one of those speeds. This War Dancer will try to slow them down early and Let The Goodtimes Roll late. (7) DRAKEN is my wise guy pick. He's been first or second in his 5 races this year. He steps up a level today but is in great form and there is no monsters in here. I'll include at this price.

$ 7.00 WPS 3 Cost $ 21.00

$ 3.00 Ex 1, 3 w/ 1, 3, 7, 12 Cost $ 18.00
