Saratoga: Sunday, 7/17, Plays - Pete's Picks

Writer: Little PeteLittle Pete

The first weekend at the Spa for 2022 will come to a close on this hot and humid Sunday. As usual, the races up here did not disappoint and we're ready for more. We have a 10 race card on a quiet day for stakes action as the feature is the G3 Quick Call for 3yr old colts; we are locked in and ready to take a swing at each one of them. I will be looking to take down the early double (Races 1-2) and a middle pick 3 (Races 5-7) . Big Pete will have his full breakdown on his TWO "Play of the Days" and the late pick 3 (Races 8-10). We appreciate you taking a look at this write-up and GOOD LUCK.

Cost: $48.00

Big Pete's $ 1.00 Late Pick 3:

Little Pete's Early Double:

Race 1:

(8) Miracle Mike has some experience and ran a nice debut at this distance. This horse may be too strong late and take this one. (9) Pete N Billy has a great name and some nice workouts coming into this one. I think the track will play well today to horses that stalk the lead and close strongly, which I anticipate Luis Saez to attempt to do that with this horse to the outside. (7) Conman is projecting to be the speed in here and if this horse can run to the workouts then this horse could be a tough catch late. (4) Light Man is my last play in here with Jose Ortiz getting the mount. We should expect this horse to shoot from the gate to find the rail and wait for the lane to open up late to really kick it into gear.

$3.00 WPS 7 Cost: $9.00

$2.00 Ex 7,8 w/ 4,7,8,9 Cost: $12.00

$1.00 Ex 4,9 w/ 4,7,8,9 Cost: $6.00

Race 2:

(6) MommasGottaRun is the speed to the outside and if left alone early then this horse will run away with it. I do not think that this filly will get to set fractions without some competition and that opens it up late down the stretch to some others. (3) Leviosa has had some tough trips the last three times out and I think the Irad bump will make a tremendous difference in here. The horse is training well and the class relief should allow this horse to be forwardly placed without have to exert too much early energy. (2) Trinity Titoli is coming into this one after a romping win last time out. This horse should be poised to run a similar race in here and looks to be in ascending form.

$3.00 WPS 3 Cost: $9.00

$2.00 Ex Box 2,3,6 Cost: $12.00

Big Pete's "Play of the Day":

Race 3:

You don’t go lower than these MCL 25K events here at the Spa but they have to fill cards. There is speed entered as Roz, Shane’s Risk and Crosstalk will likely duke it out. That is why I’m leaning for a stalker to run them down. (3) BIG BEAN CHRISTINE has been improving in her last few starts, but she has also been dropping down. Today is different though. She finally gets a jock to get her to the winners circle. Seaz gets the call and they should get a dry track that she hasn’t seen for awhile. A Re-Pete of her last two races will be enough against this group.

(7) Escapewithfriends switches to dirt and (10) Crosstalk will be dangerous if they leave her alone up front.

$ 7.00 WPS 3 Cost $ 21.00

$ 3.00 Exacta Box 3, 7, 10 Cost $ 18.00

We’ll also use (3) Big Bean Christine in R3 and try to crash in on a DAILY DOUBLE play.

We’ll use (3) Indimaaj to wire them and (7) Crafty Daddy to come late in the 4th.

$ 7.00 Double 3 w/ 3, 7 Cost $ 14.00

Big Pete's "Play of the Day":

Race 4:

Jose climbs aboard (3) INDIMAAJ in a race with not much speed. This Tapit can take control around the first turn and lull them to sleep. Look for Ortiz to get separation on the far turn to try to bottom them out for the stretch run.

(6) Two Thirty Five and (7) Crafty Daddy can come late for 2nd.

$ 7.00 WPS 3 Cost $ 21.00

$ 7.00 Exacta 3 w/ 6, 7 Cost $ 14.00

Little Pete's Spot Pick 3:

Race 5:

Speed is playing well on the grass, so I need to include (2) Veterans Beach and (7) Sheriff Bianco. I think both of these horses will seek and find the front and may be too much to ask to catch late from the others. (5) Yarrow is a logical play in here to eat up ground quickly, but this is the first time facing winners and it did take a decent amount of time to break his maiden. Manny should be flying down the stretch as well on (10) Athenry who is going to make it a very exciting finish in this grass sprint.

$3.00 WPS 2 Cost: $9.00

$2.00 Ex 2,10 w/ 2,5,7,10 Cost: $12.00

$1.00 Ex 5,7 w/ 2,5,7,10 Cost: $6.00

Race 6:

(4) Road to Success should be able to find the rail early and have plenty in the tank late to run on with this one. I also like (9) Victory Built shooting from the gate to find the early lead and then having enough in reserve to handle late closing foes. (6) O’Trouble is getting some class relief and moving back to a sprint. This horse should be running down horses late. (10) Brunate has the hungry Dylan Davis aboard and I think enough early speed to get involved.

$3.00 WPS 9 Cost: $9.00

$2.00 Ex 4,9 w/ 4,6,9,10 Cost: $12.00

$1.00 Ex 6,10 w/ 4,6,9,10 Cost: $6.00

Race 7:

(5) New Ginya and (9) RussiaRussiaRussia are competing against each other again and I think the Brown horse has vengeance on the brain. (4) Lady Thornhill is an interesting horse in here who raced back in May after a long layoff and now has another two months off of racing. Jose Ortiz is choosing to ride again after riding to break her maiden and could be a surprisingly fast horse late.

$3.00 WPS 9 Cost $9.00

$3.00 Ex 9 w/ 4,5 Cost: $6.00

$1.00 Ex 4,5 w/ 4,5,9 Cost: $4.00

Big Pete's Late Pick 3:

Race 8:

Unfortunately, likely favorite (8) BIG INVASION, will get some help up front as there appears to be plenty of speed entered. If they go at it, his job becomes easier to mount a late run. A must use but I’m looking for one of those speeds to shake loose and hope the course, which has been kind to speed, gets them home. Ward dumps Irad for Spencer on (7) ASYMMETRIC. This may be the plan come Breeders Cup to see if this guy is ready for the big stage. He has lots of speed and they are banking on Jamie to control it the whole way. Irad jumps on (4) NOBALS in here. They may need to rate today as the others look faster out of the gate. They should get first jump on the stalkers/closers.

$ 7.00 WPS 7 Cost $ 21.00

$ 3.00 Ex 7, 8 w/ 4, 7, 8 Cost $ 12.00

Race 9:

Brown has (4) SOUND MONEY hitting some high speed figures and didn’t run that bad against Jackie last time. On paper, this guy looks tough and is a must use. They entered Reinvestment Risk yesterday in an Optional Claimer and that one was damaged goods at 1/9. Beware of this guy today as they follow the same move. (6) THREE TWO ZONE looks to be the now horse. He posted back to back big numbers with Davis up. There is enough speed to set him up for his run. His July 10th bullet out worked all but one that day and if this 8:1ML holds up, the mortgage is on the line. (5) FORTIN HILL usually fires as he sports 3 wins and 3 place finishes in 8 starts. This 7F fits this Mucho Macho Man colt the best and will try to break the Three Two Zone with an outside shot.

$ 7.00 WPS 6 Cost $ 21.00

$ 3.00 Ex 5, 6 w/ 1, 4, 5, 6 Cost $ 18.00

Race 10:

No one wants the outside post in these two turn inner turf events but that may not be the case for (12) TAPPLE CIDER. She looked uncomfortable racing in the middle of the pack on a few occasions. There’s enough time for Davis to save some ground before the first turn comes up so a clean trip may be just what this Tonalist needs. (1) JANNIE MAE, on the other hand, will benefit with the rail draw as she has some speed to stay close and save ground the whole way. She’ll be a nice price and won’t mind the stretch out as she tries this class level for a second time. (5) OUR JESSICA is the gorilla in the room as Brown and Irad team up and ship this Cairo Prince north to dropped to this level last time and it made a difference. A slight hesitation early may have cost her position that she couldn’t make up later. A clean trip for this Laoban is probably all she needs. Brown (10) SKYWARD PRINCESS which will make this gal a must use. It’s not his best move but she ran ok against better and probably is the filly to beat but you have to take a shot against when he makes this move.

$ 7.00 WPS 1 Cost $ 21.00

$ 3.00 Ex 1, 12 w/ 1, 5, 10, 12 Cost $ 18.00
